The DEFRA Family Food 2012 survey involves over 5500 households completing food diaries and submitting receipts for their food & drink consumption and purchases. The detailed findings are used by the UK government to inform their policies, as well as being used in academic research.

We’ve visualised three key areas of the findings to display the state of the nation’s dietary habits.

The UNDER 30s
consume the LEAST OF
ALL FOOD TYPES.

LESS FIBRE than they
should. UNDER 30s consume
just 54% of the RNI.

EVERY GROUP
apart from the UNDER 30s
consume over the RNI of
SATURATED FAT.

region that consumes below the
RNI of CARBOHYDRATE.

The WEST MIDLANDS and
LONDON both consume over
the average RNI of CALORIES.

SCOTLAND and
NORTHERN IRELAND
consume the LEAST FAT. Every other
region consumes above the RNI.

On average the regions consume 135%
of the SATURED FAT RNI. LONDON
consume the most (143%) and
SCOTLAND the least (124%).

ALL REGIONS consume
above the RNI of SODIUM,
with LONDON consuming
the most.
